PAINTERS & DECORATORS GLASGOW

A Better Paint Finish Usually Starts With What Happens Before the Paint Tin Is Opened.

Most decorating problems are not caused by the final colour. They begin underneath it: loose old paint, dust, grease, moisture, glossy surfaces with no key, unsealed new plaster, rust, wallpaper paste residue, damaged filler or stains that have not been properly isolated.

That is why painting is not simply a matter of applying two coats to every surface. Walls, ceilings, doors, timber, metal, plasterboard and previously papered walls behave differently. The preparation, primer and finish need to match the substrate and the condition of the property.

Glasgow also has a wide mix of property types, from older tenements and Victorian buildings to modern flats, rental properties, offices and commercial premises. Older surfaces may have many previous coatings, repaired plaster, wallpaper layers or historic paint beneath newer work. Newer properties can present different issues such as fresh plaster, plasterboard joints and high-use modern finishes.

The service guides below explain what we do and, more importantly, why particular decorating methods matter. The aim is to help property owners understand the difference between a quick cosmetic cover-up and decorating that has been prepared to last.

After decorating, our cleaning services can help prepare suitable properties for the next occupier or working day. For separate upkeep of roofs, gutters, driveways and patios, see our roof and exterior cleaning services.

SPECIALIST, EXTERIOR & PROPERTY PAINTING

Decorating for Different Surfaces and Property Conditions.

Metal, water-stained walls, exterior surfaces and occupied commercial properties each need a different approach. These are not simply extensions of ordinary wall painting.

WHAT PROFESSIONAL DECORATING ACTUALLY INVOLVES

Paint Cannot Correct a Surface Problem That Has Not Been Prepared Properly.

Cleaning, filling, sanding, priming, moisture control and correct product selection are the foundations beneath the visible finish.

Surface Preparation

Loose coatings, dust, grease and contamination can interfere with adhesion and should be addressed before repainting.

New Plaster & Porosity

Fresh, porous surfaces need to be dry and prepared with the correct first-coat system for the selected paint.

Stain Blocking

Water stains and some contaminants can migrate through normal paint unless they are isolated with a suitable primer.

Wood Preparation

Loose paint, resinous knots, moisture and decay need different responses before timber is recoated.

Metal Preparation

Rust, oil and metal type influence the primer and coating system required.

Historic Coatings

Older buildings can contain lead paint beneath later coatings, so uncontrolled dry sanding or burning of old paint should be avoided.

ABOUT OUR PAINTING & DECORATING SERVICE

Painting & Decorating Is One of Our Specialist Property Support Services.

Wase Support Services provides painting and decorating for residential, landlord, managed-property and suitable commercial environments. Our approach is built around preparation, substrate condition and the finish the space needs.

Our painting team brings practical decorating experience across walls, ceilings, wallpaper, woodwork, doors, metal, rental refreshes and property-maintenance work. We do not treat every surface as another wall waiting for emulsion.

We also recognise where decorating stops. An active water leak needs repair before stain blocking. Rotten wood needs repair or replacement. Structural cracks need the appropriate investigation. Severe corrosion is not solved by a decorative top coat. Identifying those limits protects the quality of the finished work.

PAINTING & DECORATING QUESTIONS

Real Questions Property Owners Ask Before Decorating.

Practical answers about peeling paint, new plaster, wallpaper, water stains, rust, doors, paint finishes, old coatings and occupied properties.

Peeling is often caused by what is underneath the new coating rather than the quality of the finish paint itself. Loose old paint, moisture, grease, dust, poor surface preparation or an unsuitable primer can all prevent good adhesion.

Not every wall needs heavy sanding. Sanding is used where necessary to smooth filler, feather old paint edges or provide a key on suitable glossy surfaces. Excessive sanding can damage plasterboard paper and can also create unnecessary dust.

New plaster is porous and needs to be fully dry before decoration. The first coat should follow the selected paint manufacturer’s instructions for sealing new or bare plaster. This is often referred to as a mist coat when a suitable water-based paint is correctly thinned for that purpose.

Fresh plaster should not be decorated until it has dried sufficiently for the chosen paint system. Painting too early can trap moisture and contribute to poor adhesion or an uneven finish.

Filler and the surrounding painted wall can absorb paint differently. If repairs are not sanded, dusted and prepared consistently, the patch can appear different in sheen or texture after the final coat.

It is sometimes technically possible to paint sound wallpaper, but seams, texture, bubbles and loose edges can remain visible. If the paper is failing or the customer wants a smooth painted wall, removal and proper wall preparation usually gives more control over the final result.

Bubbles can come from trapped air, uneven paste, poor wall preparation or local adhesion problems. Some small bubbles settle as the paper dries, but persistent bubbles can indicate that the paper has not bonded correctly.

Open seams can result from dry edges, insufficient adhesive, over-soaking, excessive stretching or poor preparation. The wallcovering and paste instructions should be followed because different papers behave differently.

The first drop is aligned to a true vertical or plumb line rather than assuming the corner is straight. This is especially important in older properties where walls and corners can be out of level.

Yes, particularly where plaster is weak, there are multiple layers of old paper or excessive steam and moisture are used. Careful removal reduces unnecessary damage, but defects hidden under the wallpaper may only become visible after stripping.

Only after the source of the water has been stopped and the affected surface is sufficiently dry and sound. Residual water staining can bleed through ordinary emulsion, so a suitable stain-blocking primer may be needed before repainting.

No. Paint can improve the finish after the underlying problem has been addressed, but active damp, leaks or persistent condensation need their cause resolved. Surface mould can return if the moisture conditions remain.

Minor cosmetic damage may be repairable, but badly softened, swollen or deteriorated plasterboard may need replacement rather than filler. The water source must be fixed before decorative repair begins.

Loose rust and failed coatings should not simply be hidden under a top coat. The metal needs suitable cleaning and preparation, with an appropriate primer or coating system for the metal and exposure.

Common causes include grease or contamination, rust left underneath, poor preparation and using a coating that is not compatible with the metal. Galvanised metal and ordinary steel can require different preparation.

Doors are high-touch moving surfaces and usually need a more durable coating system than an ordinary low-contact wall. Existing gloss may also need cleaning and preparation before recoating.

Paint can feel dry before it has fully hardened. Closing the door tightly too soon can cause blocking or marking where the painted surfaces touch. The coating manufacturer’s drying and curing guidance should be followed.

There is no single best finish for every room. Flatter matt finishes reflect less light and can make small imperfections less noticeable. More durable or higher-sheen finishes may be easier to clean but can highlight uneven preparation. Room use and surface condition matter.

Yes, suitable projects can be phased around occupied properties. Furniture, access routes, working hours, ventilation and drying areas need to be considered so the decorating programme is practical.

It can. HSE guidance notes that lead pigments were widely used in paints in older buildings and may still exist beneath later coatings. Old paint should not be aggressively dry-sanded or burned without considering the risk and appropriate controls.

Yes. We can provide rental-property refreshes for suitable homes, flats and managed properties, including walls, ceilings, doors, woodwork and other agreed decorating work.

Yes. We can support suitable offices, shops, workplaces and managed properties, with the work planned around access, operating hours, presentation and the areas being decorated.

Yes, for suitable exterior surfaces. Exterior work depends on surface condition, safe access, moisture and weather, so the programme may need to change if conditions are unsuitable for the selected coating.
